Borderplex Alliance

Promote economic development in Texas’ SouthWest border region

The Raben Group has brought incredible value to The Borderplex Alliance and to the entire El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border region. If you want to reach the eyes and ears of decision makers in Washington, D.C. or Austin, they’ll develop a comprehensive advocacy plan for you. If you want to change the narrative about your region, they’ll run an effective messaging campaign for you. If you want to build a coalition, they’ll do it without blinking an eye. The Borderplex Alliance has greatly benefitted from their expertise.

– Woody L. Hunt, Chairman of The Borderplex Alliance Board.

Situated in the heart of the U.S.-Mexico Border, The Borderplex Alliance works to promote economic development and prosperity in the Ciudad Juárez, El Paso, and southern New Mexico region.

Since 2015, The Raben Group has acted as an in-house agency, managing all strategic communications, media relations, advocacy, and program management operations for Borderplex in order to position the organization as a leader on regional economic development and U.S.-Mexico relations.

Through our strategic communications support, Borderplex is changing the narrative about what life, business, and security truly is like along the U.S.-Mexico Border and is being sought out by national organizations and reporters to tell that story.

In partnership with the Aspen Institute’s Latinos and Society Program, Raben managed two learning tours of the Borderplex. More than a dozen national journalists representing outlets such as The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, Reuters, Marketplace, and The Los Angeles Times spent three days learning about the economic, innovation, and cultural progress happening in the region. The tours resulted in extensive media coverage on the work Borderplex and its partners do in the region to promote economic development and a better quality of life, and established Borderplex as a go-to resource for reporters on binational economic development.

Raben has been managing the day-to-day communications operations for Borderplex and has helped elevate the profile of Borderplex staff by securing them features in outlets such as the San Diego Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Huffington Post, Fort Worth Star Telegram and El Diario de Mexico.

Equally important to telling the story of economic development along the border is reaching the decision makers in policy and resource allocation– decision makers who often operate without knowing how business, commerce, and trade works in border communities. Leveraging our relationships with national economic development agencies, staff within the administration, and elected officials, we have cultivated relationships between Borderplex and staff at the Department of Commerce, State Department, the Small Business Administration, and others.

These relationships have resulted in Borderplex staff participating in national conferences on economic development to talk about their approach, identification of federal grant opportunities to support their work, and—most importantly—national agency and elected leaders asking Borderplex to provide data, weigh in on issues that impact business and commerce along the U.S.-Mexico Border, and lead delegation tours of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Raben has coordinated over a dozen tours of the region for policy advisors and staff of U.S. Senators and Representatives. All leave with a different outlook on the economic realities of the North American Borderplex.

The Raben Group also managed the communications, outreach, and production for the 2016 U.S.-Mexico Summit, which convened over 200 individuals in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez to discuss economic, social and civic issues facing border communities across the country. The event featured a dialogue between the Honorable Roberta Jacobson, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, and Honorable Carlos Sada, Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States, and generated media coverage in both U.S. and Mexican outlets and positioned Borderplex as a high-profile convenor to discuss border issues and regional economic development.

Embedded and trusted partners in the operations of the Borderplex, Raben provides continuous program management support to ensure all initiatives align with and strengthen the strategic vision of the organization. For example, Raben helped the organization launch its global initiatives and developed the 5-year strategic growth plan for the region.
