Square One Project

Raben transforms justice with Square One, Columbia University's Justice Lab project tackling poverty, racial inequality, and envisioning a new crime framework.

About the client

Square One Project is a Columbia University Justice Lab initiative that rethinks America's crime approach, focusing on community strength over punishment.

Our Work

The Square One Project is a project of Columbia University’s Justice Lab that is working to address the fundamental issues – poverty and racial inequality, violence and safety, criminalization, and punishment – that drive our criminal legal system, fundamentally rethinking America’s approach to crime and envisioning a new framework, one less reliant on punishment and more focused on community strength and resilience.

Raben developed Square One’s strategy and supports its work of idea generation and narrative change through public and private convenings, all bringing together activists, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and community representatives; development and publication of academic and policy papers, blog posts, and videos; and growing partnerships at the local and national levels.

Raben also provides comprehensive communications support to Square One, including social media, extensive earned media outreach, and opinion piece placement in leading publications, including The Washington Post, USA Today, the Detroit Free Press, and the Sacramento Bee.
